It is somewhat odd that the EDI format is never used for clinical or medical data typically hosted in EHR systems. It is as if “administrative” and “clinical” domains exist in two completely non-overlapping universes.
However, it is not the case. Insurance claims have to be generated based on medical information, so there is very tight relationship between the two.
The use of different formats mostly stems from the fact that claim transmission was computerized well before the wide adoption of electronic health records, e.g., one of the oldest such systems, ???, was developed and widely adopted in 80th (Michale Singer’s book).
